How to Remove Loox Leftover Code from Your Shopify Theme

Loox leftovers are rarely whole files. In the stores we scan, they are lines inside your own theme files: a product card or product template that still asks for a Loox star rating and review count.

Those lines were added so stars could show on product cards. After Loox is uninstalled, the metafields they read are empty, so the stars disappear but the code keeps running on every collection page.

What Loox leaves behind

Across roughly 170 Shopify stores scanned with Store Health, about 1 in 20 still had theme code reading Loox data that no longer existed.

Theme files

  • snippets/card-product.liquid: The most common place: star rating code inside the product card.
  • sections/main-product.liquid: Rating or review count near the product title.
  • snippets/product-info.liquid: Some themes put the rating here instead.
  • snippets/structured-data.liquid: Review data added to product structured data.

Metafields the theme still reads

These keys are read by theme code, but no data exists for them once the app is gone.

  • loox.avg_rating in product cards and product templates
  • loox.num_reviews in product cards and product templates

Metafields the app stores

Data Loox may keep in your store after uninstall. It is harmless once no theme code reads it.

  • shop: loox.global_html_head, loox.global_html_body
  • shop: loox.global_stats, loox.rich_snippet
  • shop: loox.review_widget_settings
  • product: loox.reviews, loox.avg_rating, loox.num_reviews

How to remove Loox code manually

Check first: Open snippets/card-product.liquid (or your theme's product card snippet) and search for loox. Rating code there runs once for every product on a collection page.

  1. Duplicate your live theme. In Online Store > Themes, choose Duplicate on the live theme and do all of the work below on the copy.
  2. Turn off the app embed, if there is one. In the theme editor, open Theme settings > App embeds and switch off anything from Loox. Remove any Loox app blocks from your templates too.
  3. Search the code. Open Edit code and search for loox, avg_rating, num_reviews. Write down every file that matches.
  4. Remove references before files. Delete the {% render %} and {% include %} lines that load Loox snippets, and any code that reads the metafields listed above. Start with layout/theme.liquid, then templates, sections, and snippets.
  5. Delete the files. Once nothing renders them, delete the Loox snippets, sections, and layouts. If you are unsure about a file, leave it for now. An unused file costs nothing.
  6. Test the duplicate. Preview a collection page, a product page, and the product structured data (with Google's Rich Results Test), on desktop and mobile. Check the browser console for errors.
  7. Publish and recheck. Publish the cleaned theme during a quiet hour and keep the old one as a backup until you are sure everything works.

Watch out: If you still have reviews in another app, do not just delete the block. Replace the Loox reads with your new app's rating, or with Shopify's standard reviews.rating metafield if your new app fills it.

Faster: let Store Health find it

Store Health scans your theme, scripts, and metafields in one read-only pass. It shows script tags and renders of missing snippets with their file and line number, and lists metafields your theme reads that hold no data. Nothing is changed in your store.

FAQ

Why do I not see any Loox files in my theme?

Loox may run through an app block or app embed, in which case the theme only contains a few lines that read its metafields. Search your code for loox instead of looking for a loox file.

Can leftover Loox code hurt SEO?

It can if your structured data still references Loox ratings. Empty or missing rating values can make review markup invalid. Check the product page in Google's Rich Results Test after cleanup.

Should I delete the loox shop metafields?

They do no harm on the storefront once nothing reads them. Remove the theme code first. Delete the stored data only if you will not reinstall Loox.
