How to Remove Growave Leftover Code from Your Shopify Theme
Growave started as SocialShopWave, and many themes still carry snippets with the old ssw and socialshopwave names. Reviews, wishlist, and loyalty were wired in through several small snippets rendered from product cards, quick views, and the old Product Reviews snippets.
After uninstalling, the most common leftover we see is a render line for an ssw-widget snippet that no longer exists. The page still loads, but the theme asks for a file that is gone on every product card.
What Growave leaves behind
Across roughly 170 Shopify stores scanned with Store Health, about 1 in 17 still had Growave or SocialShopWave code pointing to files or data that no longer exist.
Theme files
snippets/ssw-widget-avg-rate-listing.liquid: Star rating on product cards. Often already deleted while its render line stays.snippets/socialshopwave-widget-recommends.liquid: Review widget on product pages. Also often missing while still rendered.snippets/ssw-widget-avg-rate-profile.liquid: Rating on the product page.snippets/ssw-widget-faveicon.liquid: Wishlist heart icon.snippets/mm-socialshopwave-widget-recommends.liquid, snippets/mm-ssw-widget-faveicon.liquid: Prefixed copies that may remain next to the originals.
Lines that point to missing files
{% render 'ssw-widget-avg-rate-listing' %}insnippets/product-reviews-app__badge.liquid and product card or quick view snippets. The most common missing render.{% render 'socialshopwave-widget-recommends' %}insnippets/product-reviews-app__snippet.liquid. Review widget hooked into the old Product Reviews snippet.
Metafields the theme still reads
These keys are read by theme code, but no data exists for them once the app is gone.

Metafields the app stores
Data Growave may keep in your store after uninstall. It is harmless once no theme code reads it.

How to remove Growave code manually
Check first: Search for ssw-widget. Every render of a snippet that no longer exists in your snippets folder can go.
- Duplicate your live theme. In Online Store > Themes, choose Duplicate on the live theme and do all of the work below on the copy.
- Turn off the app embed, if there is one. In the theme editor, open Theme settings > App embeds and switch off anything from Growave. Remove any Growave app blocks from your templates too.
- Search the code. Open Edit code and search for
ssw, socialshopwave, growave. Write down every file that matches. - Remove references before files. Delete the
{% render %}and{% include %}lines that load Growave snippets, and any code that reads the metafields listed above. Start withlayout/theme.liquid, then templates, sections, and snippets. - Delete the files. Once nothing renders them, delete the Growave snippets, sections, and layouts. If you are unsure about a file, leave it for now. An unused file costs nothing.
- Test the duplicate. Preview a collection page, a product page, the quick view, and any wishlist or account pages, on desktop and mobile. Check the browser console for errors.
- Publish and recheck. Publish the cleaned theme during a quiet hour and keep the old one as a backup until you are sure everything works.
Watch out: Search for ssw- with the dash. A plain ssw search also matches words like password.
Faster: let Store Health find it
Store Health scans your theme, scripts, and metafields in one read-only pass. It shows script tags and renders of missing snippets with their file and line number, and lists metafields your theme reads that hold no data. Nothing is changed in your store.
FAQ
Are SocialShopWave and Growave the same app?
Yes. Growave was previously called SocialShopWave, which is why its theme code uses ssw and socialshopwave names.
Growave included wishlist and loyalty. Is there code for those too?
There may be. The ssw-widget-faveicon snippet is the wishlist icon, and loyalty widgets may use other ssw snippets. Search for ssw- to find all of them.
Is a render line for a missing snippet harmful?
It does not break the page, but the theme still processes it for every product card, and Theme Check reports it as an error. Removing it keeps the theme clean and easier to update.
