How to Remove Judge.me Leftover Code from Your Shopify Theme

Judge.me is the most common review app in the stores we scan, so it is also the most common source of review leftovers. Older installs wrote Liquid snippets straight into the theme and hooked them into product templates. Uninstalling the app revokes its access, but those theme edits stay where they are.

The result is usually quiet: a render tag that points to a snippet that no longer exists, or a product card that still asks for a Judge.me star badge. Nothing crashes, but the theme keeps doing work for an app you no longer use.

What Judge.me leaves behind

Across roughly 170 Shopify stores scanned with Store Health, about 1 in 7 still had Judge.me code that pointed to files or data that no longer exist.

Theme files

  • snippets/judgeme_widgets.liquid: The main widget snippet. Often rendered from other snippets, and the most common missing file we see.
  • snippets/judgeme_core.liquid: Core setup snippet, usually rendered from the layout.
  • snippets/judgeme_all_reviews.liquid: Used by an all-reviews page.
  • snippets/mm-judgeme-widgets.liquid: A prefixed copy of the widget snippet that may exist alongside the original.
  • sections/judgeme_carousel_section.liquid: A reviews carousel section that may remain on some themes.

Lines that point to missing files

  • {% render 'judgeme_widgets' %} in snippets/product-reviews-app__snippet.liquid. Judge.me can take over the old Shopify Product Reviews snippets. If judgeme_widgets is gone, this line renders nothing.
  • {% render 'judgeme_widgets' %} in snippets/product-reviews-app__badge.liquid. Same pattern for the star badge on product cards.

Metafields the theme still reads

These keys are read by theme code, but no data exists for them once the app is gone.

  • judgeme.badge in product cards and product templates
  • judgeme.widget in product templates
  • judgeme.verified_badge, judgeme.medals in trust badges in the footer or product page
  • judgeme.all_reviews_header, judgeme.all_reviews_rating, judgeme.all_reviews_count in all-reviews blocks
  • judgeme.ugc_media_grid in photo and video review galleries

Metafields the app stores

Data Judge.me may keep in your store after uninstall. It is harmless once no theme code reads it.

  • shop: judgeme.settings
  • shop: judgeme.featured_carousel
  • shop: judgeme.all_reviews_count, judgeme.all_reviews_rating
  • shop: judgeme.html_miracle_0

How to remove Judge.me code manually

Check first: Start with snippets/product-reviews-app__snippet.liquid and snippets/product-reviews-app__badge.liquid. They are the most common place where a judgeme_widgets render is left pointing at a file that no longer exists.

  1. Duplicate your live theme. In Online Store > Themes, choose Duplicate on the live theme and do all of the work below on the copy.
  2. Turn off the app embed, if there is one. In the theme editor, open Theme settings > App embeds and switch off anything from Judge.me. Remove any Judge.me app blocks from your templates too.
  3. Search the code. Open Edit code and search for judgeme, jdgm, judge.me. Write down every file that matches.
  4. Remove references before files. Delete the {% render %} and {% include %} lines that load Judge.me snippets, and any code that reads the metafields listed above. Start with layout/theme.liquid, then templates, sections, and snippets.
  5. Delete the files. Once nothing renders them, delete the Judge.me snippets, sections, and layouts. If you are unsure about a file, leave it for now. An unused file costs nothing.
  6. Test the duplicate. Preview a product page, a collection page with product cards, and any all-reviews page, on desktop and mobile. Check the browser console for errors.
  7. Publish and recheck. Publish the cleaned theme during a quiet hour and keep the old one as a backup until you are sure everything works.

Faster: let Store Health find it

Store Health scans your theme, scripts, and metafields in one read-only pass. It shows script tags and renders of missing snippets with their file and line number, and lists metafields your theme reads that hold no data. Nothing is changed in your store.

FAQ

Will removing judgeme_widgets break my product page?

Not if the app is already uninstalled. Without Judge.me the snippet has nothing to show. Remove the render line first, then the file, and check a product page on the duplicate theme before you publish.

Should I delete the judgeme metafields?

Only if you are sure you will not reinstall Judge.me or export your reviews again. Theme code that reads judgeme.badge or judgeme.widget can go right away. The stored data can wait.

Why does my theme still mention Judge.me inside the Product Reviews snippet?

Judge.me can write its widget into the old Shopify Product Reviews snippets so existing review blocks keep working. Those snippets stay after uninstall, with the Judge.me render line inside.

Do I need to remove anything if I switched to another review app?

Yes. Two review apps reading different metafields in the same product card is a common source of duplicate stars and extra work on every page.
