How to Remove GemPages Leftover Code from Your Shopify Theme

GemPages adds its own layouts, a head snippet, and gp-section files for the pages and global sections you build. Uninstalling the app removes the editor, not the files it published into your theme.

The leftover we see most is snippets/gp-head.liquid still loading GemPages styles from metafields that no longer exist.

What GemPages leaves behind

Across roughly 170 Shopify stores scanned with Store Health, about 1 in 33 still had GemPages code reading data that no longer existed.

Theme files

  • snippets/gp-head.liquid: Loads GemPages styles and fonts in the head. The most common leftover.
  • layout/theme.gempages.blank.liquid: A layout used by GemPages pages.
  • layout/theme.gempages.header.liquid, layout/theme.gempages.footer.liquid: Layouts with your theme's header or footer.
  • sections/gp-section-<id>.liquid, sections/gp-global-section-<id>.liquid: One per GemPages page or global section.
  • snippets/gp-section-<id>-<n>.liquid: Parts of a GemPages section.

Metafields the theme still reads

These keys are read by theme code, but no data exists for them once the app is gone.

  • GEMPAGES.gp_style_css, GEMPAGES.gp_custom_fonts_css in snippets/gp-head.liquid
  • GEMPAGES.ASSETS_VERSION in snippets/gp-head.liquid
  • GEMPAGES.enableThirdPartyCart in GemPages snippets

Metafields the app stores

Data GemPages may keep in your store after uninstall. It is harmless once no theme code reads it.

  • shop: gempages.defaultFooterScript
  • shop: GEMPAGES.gp_style_css, GEMPAGES.ASSETS_VERSION
  • shop: GEMPAGES.is_gp_head_clean, GEMPAGES.swatches

How to remove GemPages code manually

Check first: Find every render of gp-head first. If it is rendered from layout/theme.liquid, it runs on every page of your store.

  1. Duplicate your live theme. In Online Store > Themes, choose Duplicate on the live theme and do all of the work below on the copy.
  2. Turn off the app embed, if there is one. In the theme editor, open Theme settings > App embeds and switch off anything from GemPages. Remove any GemPages app blocks from your templates too.
  3. Search the code. Open Edit code and search for gempages, gp-head, gp-section, GEMPAGES. Write down every file that matches.
  4. Remove references before files. Delete the {% render %} and {% include %} lines that load GemPages snippets, and any code that reads the metafields listed above. Start with layout/theme.liquid, then templates, sections, and snippets.
  5. Delete the files. Once nothing renders them, delete the GemPages snippets, sections, and layouts. If you are unsure about a file, leave it for now. An unused file costs nothing.
  6. Test the duplicate. Preview the pages built with GemPages, the home page, and a product page, on desktop and mobile. Check the browser console for errors.
  7. Publish and recheck. Publish the cleaned theme during a quiet hour and keep the old one as a backup until you are sure everything works.

Watch out: Pages built in GemPages use the theme.gempages layouts. Move those pages to your normal templates, or unpublish them, before deleting the layouts.

Faster: let Store Health find it

Store Health scans your theme, scripts, and metafields in one read-only pass. It shows script tags and renders of missing snippets with their file and line number, and lists metafields your theme reads that hold no data. Nothing is changed in your store.

FAQ

Why does gp-head still load after uninstalling GemPages?

The snippet was written into your theme and is rendered from the layout. Uninstalling the app does not edit your theme files, so the render line and the snippet stay.

Can I delete the theme.gempages layouts?

Yes, once no page template uses them. Check your page templates for a GemPages layout before deleting.

What are the GEMPAGES metafields?

Settings and style data GemPages stored on your shop. Remove the theme code that reads them first, then delete the data if you will not reinstall GemPages.
