How to Remove EComposer Leftover Code from Your Shopify Theme

EComposer installs helper snippets and sections with ecom and ecom_ names, plus ecom- sections for pages you build. Some of these helpers render other EComposer snippets, so a partial cleanup often leaves broken render lines behind.

The pattern we see most: snippets/ecom_theme_helper.liquid still in place, rendering an ecom-toast snippet that no longer exists.

What EComposer leaves behind

Across roughly 170 Shopify stores scanned with Store Health, about 1 in 20 still had EComposer code pointing to files or data that no longer exist.

Theme files

  • snippets/ecom_theme_helper.liquid: Helper snippet. Often renders the missing ecom-toast snippet.
  • sections/ecom-default-template-quickview.liquid: Quick view section. It may also read several review apps' metafields.
  • sections/ecom_filters.liquid: Collection filters. It may render a missing ecom_filters_snippet.
  • snippets/ecom_google_snippet.liquid: Structured data helper.
  • sections/ecom-<id>-home.liquid, sections/ecom-<id>-page.liquid: Sections for pages built in EComposer.

Lines that point to missing files

  • {% render 'ecom-toast' %} in snippets/ecom_theme_helper.liquid. The most common missing render.
  • {% render 'ecom_filters_snippet' %} in sections/ecom_filters.liquid. Missing in some stores after partial cleanup.

Metafields the theme still reads

These keys are read by theme code, but no data exists for them once the app is gone.

  • ecomposer.global_css in EComposer helper snippets

Metafields the app stores

Data EComposer may keep in your store after uninstall. It is harmless once no theme code reads it.

  • product: ecomposer.countdown, ecomposer.countdown_from
  • collection: ecomposer.collections
  • shop: ecomposer.configs, ecomposer.enable_hook

Script hosts

Script tags in theme files that load from:

  • cdn.ecomposer.app

How to remove EComposer code manually

Check first: Search for ecom_theme_helper and ecom-toast. Remove the render of the helper first, then the helper itself.

  1. Duplicate your live theme. In Online Store > Themes, choose Duplicate on the live theme and do all of the work below on the copy.
  2. Turn off the app embed, if there is one. In the theme editor, open Theme settings > App embeds and switch off anything from EComposer. Remove any EComposer app blocks from your templates too.
  3. Search the code. Open Edit code and search for ecom_, ecom-, ecomposer. Write down every file that matches.
  4. Remove references before files. Delete the {% render %} and {% include %} lines that load EComposer snippets, and any code that reads the metafields listed above. Start with layout/theme.liquid, then templates, sections, and snippets.
  5. Delete the files. Once nothing renders them, delete the EComposer snippets, sections, and layouts. If you are unsure about a file, leave it for now. An unused file costs nothing.
  6. Test the duplicate. Preview pages built with EComposer, a collection page with filters, the quick view, and a product page, on desktop and mobile. Check the browser console for errors.
  7. Publish and recheck. Publish the cleaned theme during a quiet hour and keep the old one as a backup until you are sure everything works.

Watch out: EComposer's quick view and structured data helpers read metafields from many review apps (Judge.me, Loox, Stamped and others). Those reads are part of EComposer, not leftovers of those apps. They go away when you remove the EComposer file.

Faster: let Store Health find it

Store Health scans your theme, scripts, and metafields in one read-only pass. It shows script tags and renders of missing snippets with their file and line number, and lists metafields your theme reads that hold no data. Nothing is changed in your store.

FAQ

What is ecom_theme_helper.liquid?

A helper snippet EComposer adds to connect its pages to your theme. Once no EComposer page or section is in use, remove its render line and the file.

Why does EComposer code mention Judge.me and Loox?

Its quick view and structured data snippets check for many review apps so ratings show whichever one you use. They are part of EComposer's code and go when EComposer's files go.

Can I keep pages I built with EComposer?

Not as built. Rebuild them with your theme's sections or unpublish them before removing EComposer's files.
