How the product score is calculated
The product score measures what percentage of your products are free of content and SEO issues. Products with incomplete data hurt discoverability, conversion rates, and the quality signals that search engines use to rank your store.
Scoring formula
Product Score = (healthy products / total products) × 100A product is considered healthy if it has none of the flagged issues described below. If your store has no products, the score is 100.
What makes a product “problematic”
Store Health flags a product if one or more of the following are true:
| Issue | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Missing product images | Customers can’t evaluate what they’re buying |
| Variant images missing | Customers selecting a color or size see a blank |
| Thin or missing description | Hurts SEO; less content for search engines to index |
| Missing SEO title or meta description | Reduces click-through rate from search results |
Image alt text missing | Accessibility issue; also used by Google Image Search |
| Product handle with special characters | Can cause broken links and canonical URL issues |
Weight in the overall health score
The product score contributes 10% of the total store health score.
How to improve your score
- Open the Products section of your scan results.
- Sort by severity to find the most common issue type across your catalog.
- For large catalogs, use Shopify’s bulk editor or a CSV export to fix content issues at scale.
- For image alt text, many themes allow setting alt text directly in the product media editor.
Improving product content quality typically has a direct, measurable effect on organic search traffic within 2–6 weeks of being re-indexed by Google.
